Analytical Chemist/Technician Opportunity at Joseph Smith & Sons

What is the job?

Reporting to the Executive Vice President, this newly created position will be responsible for setting up and running our new, state of the art laboratory which is set to be completed in April 2019. This is an ideal position for either a recent grad interested in being part of groundbreaking work in the field of metal recycling; or an individual with several years of experience interested in expanding into an independent and creative role with increased ownership.

This is a fulltime, benefits eligible position located at Joseph Smith and Sons headquarters in Capitol Heights, MD.

Specific duties to include:
• Preparation and analysis of metal samples using digestion and our ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry) system.
• Operate a complete laboratory including sample preparation, digestions, and analysis.
• Learn to develop methods and provide quality control guidance.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in a science, math or engineering related discipline with 0-3 years of experience; or 5 years of equivalent work experience
• Ability to multitask and think outside the box
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Proven experience using Microsoft Excel
• Ability to pass a thorough background and drug screening

Preferred Qualifications:
• Basic knowledge of chemistry – acids/bases
• Experience working with sample preparation
• Experience working with various types of machines
• Track record of safe and responsible work habits

What is the job?

This newly created Senior Accountant position will be responsible for most aspects within the accounting department. This is a great opportunity for a mid-career professional who is looking to take on increased responsibilities and management with the opportunity for rapid growth.

This is a fulltime, benefits eligible position reporting to the CFO and located at Joseph Smith and Sons headquarters in Capitol Heights, MD.

Specific duties to include:
• Reconcile bank accounts
• Prepare journal entries and reconcile general ledger accounts
• Work with accounts payable and accounts receivable staff to ensure timely processing of invoices and cash receipts
• Understanding of fixed assets
• Actively engaged in month and year end closing activities
• Assist with sales and personal property tax preparation
• Serve as leading accountant and mentor to other staff members

Requirements:
• 5 -10 years of relevant experience
• Ability to multitask and think outside the box
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills
• Proven experience using Microsoft Excel
• Ability to pass a thorough background and drug screening

Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline highly preferred
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• Experience working with Microsoft Dynamics
• Experience working with ADP Workforce Now
